Police And Partners Warn Of Deer Poaching Dangers

The PSNI has met with partners at Baronscourt Estate in County Tyrone to discuss illegal deer poaching and concerns around aggravated trespass.

A group, which included PSNI Wildlife and Animal Welfare Officer Emma Meredith and Strabane Neighbourhood Sergeant Lauren Griffiths, met with Lord Jamie Hamilton, owner of the estate, and Tommy Mayne, the Northern Ireland director of the British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC).

Police have stated that they can and have previously investigated complaints of aggravated trespass, where people trespass on land in a manner that is intimidating, obstructive, or disruptive. Emma Meredith said that poaching is a criminal offence under Northern Ireland law and can result in prosecution, imprisonment, and financial penalties.

Lord Hamilton said that poachers and trespassers "present a serious challenge" to landowners. Tommy Mayne of the BASC added that poaching undermines conservation work and that members of the public are putting themselves at risk by ignoring safety signage to enter parts of the estate where deer management is taking place. Emma Meredith concluded that the PSNI will continue to work closely with partners to ensure the law is adhered to.
