Greater Regulation Of Bonfires Essential – Alliance
Alliance MLA Paula Bradshaw has stated that greater regulation of bonfires is essential after a number of issues arose over the summer.
Speaking during an Assembly debate, the Chair of the Executive Office Committee called for the recommendations from the Commission on Flags, Identity, Culture and Tradition to be implemented to ensure safe events for everyone.
Ms Bradshaw highlighted the recurring use of flags, effigies, political posters and other "racist and sectarian symbols" on bonfires, as well as concerns about bonfires being built too close to homes and play parks. She said that this is not a sustainable situation. While acknowledging the right to cultural celebration, she stressed that this must be done "in a lawful, safe and respectful way." She clarified that the issue is not about "policing culture" but about safety, respect, and building communities where celebration does not come at the expense of others.
The Alliance MLA called for the FICT report to be assessed by a cross-departmental programme board to create an action plan for implementation. This, she said, would require collaboration with statutory agencies and collective effort to find a safer way forward.
"Leadership is needed, cooperation is needed and action is needed," she concluded, adding that communities "deserve safe celebrations, free from hate and free from harm."
