Minister Launches NI's First Olympic Legacy Fund

The Communities Minister, Gordon Lyons, has launched the first Olympic Legacy Fund for Northern Ireland.

The £1 million capital investment will be used to modernise facilities at local sports clubs and community groups, creating a lasting legacy in honour of Northern Ireland's athletes who competed at the Paris Olympics.

Following the success of the Olympic Medallist Fund, which invested £100,000 across six grassroots clubs, Mr Lyons secured an additional £1m to continue building on the success of the Paris Games. The new fund will provide new sporting opportunities for people of all ages and abilities.

The Olympic Legacy Fund will be delivered through a crowdfunding model in partnership with Sport NI and Crowdfunder UK. Organisations can apply for grants ranging from £1,000 to £50,000. The fund will provide a grant for 65% of the project cost, with the remaining 35% expected to be raised through community crowdfunding.

Richard Archibald, Interim CEO of Sport NI, said that the Paris 2024 Olympics were an "inspiration" and had encouraged people of all ages to get involved in sport. He stated that the funding would help to "break down the barriers that stop people from participating in sport."
