Finnegan Welcomes New Peatlands Strategy

Sinn Féin MLA Aoife Finnegan has described the launch of the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs' Peatlands Strategy as a positive step for the environment.

The party's environment spokesperson said the announcement was a vital move in protecting and restoring the region's peatlands.

Ms Finnegan highlighted the pivotal role that peatlands can play in reducing emissions and tackling biodiversity loss. She stressed that it is vital that the strategy is underpinned by a "just and fair transition," with people and rural communities at the heart of efforts to move towards a more sustainable society.

She also called for all-island and cross-border working on the strategy, especially as a number of bogs straddle the border. Ms Finnegan said the challenges and opportunities for tackling climate change are shared across the island, and she looked forward to working with Minister Muir and other parties to ensure the strategy contributes to improving the environment and rural communities.
