Infrastructure Minister Restates Commitment To A5 Project

Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has restated her commitment to the delivery of the A5 Western Transport Corridor project, despite the recent High Court ruling that quashed the latest approval for the scheme.

Speaking after an Assembly motion on the A5, Ms Kimmins said the High Court ruling in June 2025 was hugely disappointing for her, her departmental colleagues, and for all the families and campaigners who have been committed to ensuring the new road is built.

She added that despite the "setback of the judgment," she is determined to find a way forward to see the road built as soon as possible to "ensure that we save lives". The Minister said her Department has lodged an appeal against the recent judgment, which is due to be heard in December 2025. She confirmed that officials and the legal team have been "working round the clock" to prepare a "robust and comprehensive appeal".

Ms Kimmins said that over the last 18 years, more than 50 people have lost their lives on the A5. She said they were "mothers, fathers, sons, daughters and friends, and that can never be forgotten, which is why I am determined to build a new A5, because it will save lives".

She concluded by stating that it is important that everyone who wants to see this happen works together constructively to achieve that goal.
