Portadown Man Sentenced For Fraudulent Abuse Of Late Uncle's Finances

A Portadown man has been sentenced to a 12-month custodial sentence, suspended for two years, after being convicted of fraudulently abusing his late uncle's finances.

Rodger Magee (54) was sentenced at Craigavon Crown Court on Monday, 29 September 2025, after being found guilty of fraud by false representation, fraud by failing to disclose information, and fraud by abuse of position.

Magee was accused of mismanaging the pension and savings of his relative, who was aged in his late 80s and admitted to a nursing home in Portadown. Magee held enduring power of attorney for his uncle and had undertaken to pay the nursing home fees.

Concerns were raised in November 2019 after almost £3,500 in nursing home fees were going unpaid.

Detective Inspector Peter MacCionáoith of PSNI Organised Crime Branch confirmed that the matter became a police investigation in June 2020 when unauthorised withdrawals from the man's bank accounts were discovered.

Detective Inspector MacCionáoith said: "These bank statements revealed that there were in excess of £15,000 in unexplained debits from this bank account between 1 June 2018 and 19 February 2020." Magee had also moved into his uncle's former home and was using his relative's bank account to pay for oil and electricity.

Detective Inspector MacCionáoith stressed that being granted power of attorney is a "major, legal responsibility" and that Magee "failed to honour this trust and exploited his uncle's finances to his own gain."
