Translink And PHA Highlight Importance Of Organ Domation

Translink hosted a Public Health Agency (PHA) event, 'The Grand Organ Donation Life Cycle', at Grand Central Station to mark Organ Donation Week 2025.

Staff, commuters, and participants from the organ donation community took part in a virtual cycle to Dublin at the busy transport hub. The event aimed to raise awareness of the importance of organ donation in saving and transforming lives and provided a platform for those impacted to share their stories.

Health Minister Mike Nesbitt thanked everyone who has signed the Organ Donor Register. He highlighted the importance of discussing decisions, despite the introduction of Dáithí's Law in 2023, which introduced a system of deemed consent (opt-out).

Minister Nesbitt said: "It is still important that families know about your decision, as they will always be a part of the donation discussion. That is why signing the register, talking to your family about your decision and sharing the message are really important steps this Organ Donation Week."

PHA Chief Executive Aidan Dawson praised the new partnership with Translink for helping to "raise awareness of the topic with new audiences" and encouraging people to record and share their donation decision with loved ones.

Chris Conway, Translink Group Chief Executive, said the station was the "perfect setting to spark meaningful conversations and share life-saving messages that matter".

Special guests included Minister Nesbitt and Belfast Lord Mayor Councillor Tracy Kelly. The event was officially started by young organ donation campaigner Dáithí Mac Gabhann, who successfully campaigned for the change in law.

The initiative was central to Translink employee Steve Hogan, whose son, Laurie Hogan, became an organ donor in 2020, saving four lives. Steve welcomed the event as a superb platform to help grow awareness of Dáithí's Law and encourage "those sometimes-difficult conversations."
