'Danger To Life' Warning Issued As Storm Amy Hits
The Met Office has issued an Amber weather warning for very strong winds across the north and west of Northern Ireland today, Friday, 3 October.
The warning is valid from 3pm this afternoon until 8pm this evening and covers counties Fermanagh, Londonderry, much of Tyrone, and the north and west of County Antrim. The fierce weather event is being referred to as Storm Amy.
Multi-agency partners are currently meeting to co-ordinate their response to the severe forecast. The Education Authority (EA) has already advised that all schools in the areas affected by the Amber warning were required to close at 12 midday for the safety of pupils and staff.
The public is advised to expect significant disruption and potential danger, including:
• to life.
• Damage to buildings is probable, such as tiles being blown from roofs.
• Power cuts are a strong possibility, which could affect other essential services, including mobile phone coverage. • Major transport disruption is likely, with longer journey times and cancellations expected across road, rail, air, and ferry services.
• Coastal danger is likely from large waves and beach material being thrown onto coastal roads, sea fronts, and properties, posing a risk of injury and danger to life.
• Roads and bridges are likely to close.
Travel and Emergency Advice
Road users are advised to reconsider whether their journey is necessary. If you must travel, take extra care: reduce your speed due to the possibility of surface water and avoid driving through any flood water. Drivers must also adhere to all road signs and temporary traffic restrictions.
