Drug Seizure Follows A1 Hit-And-Run
A man, aged 40, has been arrested on suspicion of drug offences following a hit-and-run collision on the A1 carriageway near Banbridge on Tuesday, 7 October 2025.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) received a report of the two-vehicle collision, involving a blue Hyundai car and a white Peugeot van, shortly after 11am. The van immediately left the scene, travelling north on the A1.
Officers in Lisburn were notified and swiftly put resources in place to intercept the vehicle, which was stopped a short time later on the Old Ballynahinch Road. A subsequent search of the van uncovered a large quantity of suspected herbal cannabis, with an estimated street value in excess of £140,000 (one hundred and forty thousand pounds). The van's driver was arrested on suspicion of a number of offences, including possession of a Class B drug and possession of a Class B drug with intent to supply. He remains in police custody.
Meanwhile, the driver of the Hyundai, a man in his 80s, is currently receiving hospital treatment for injuries sustained in the collision.
Inspector McCorry commented on the operation, stating: "As a result of this excellent police work, involving officers from E and B districts, a large quantity of suspected dangerous controlled drugs are now safely off our streets."
The PSNI appealed to the public for information on drug-related criminality, urging anyone with details to contact police on the non-emergency number 101, or to submit a report online - www.psni.police.uk/makeareport/. Information can also be provided anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
