£200,000 Wind-Powered Scholarship Opens For NI STEM Students

Applications are now open for the 2025 SSE Renewables Scholarship Fund, which is offering £200,000 in financial support to first-year students commencing third-level education in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) subjects across Northern Ireland.

The scholarship, now in its eleventh year, is backed by funds from SSE's major wind farms in the region, including Slieve Kirk Wind Park and Tievenameenta Wind Farm, as well as the Greencoat Renewables-owned Slieve Divena II Wind Farm. The fund has already provided more than £1.6 million to over 500 students since its launch in 2014.

This year's available funding, topping £200,000, is estimated to provide a financial boost to around 60 new full-time third-level students. It covers up to 50% of third-level education fees for those studying at partner institutions: Ulster University, South West College, and North West Regional College.

The scheme is specifically open to students living in counties Tyrone, Derry-Londonderry, Fermanagh, and Donegal.

Vicky Boden, Community Investment Manager at SSE Renewables, said the fund helps remove financial barriers, "opening up opportunities for young people" and translating that support into creating new career opportunities.

Completed applications must be submitted to the student's chosen institution by the deadline of Friday, 7 November 2025.
