Alliance MLA Welcomes Progress On Gaza Ceasefire Deal
Alliance South Belfast MLA Kate Nicholl has welcomed the announced progress on a ceasefire deal in Gaza, following the signing of the first phase of an agreement in Egypt.
The deal is expected to see the release of hostages on both sides of the conflict and the beginning of a withdrawal of Israeli troops from parts of Gaza. Ms Nicholl stressed that the deal must be fully implemented, stating: "The news of a ceasefire is very welcome, though it’s difficult to celebrate after so much loss and destruction. I hope this marks not just an end to violence, but a turning point in the journey toward justice and a long-lasting peace."
She urged all parties to honour the agreement, adding that "Every hostage, Israeli and Palestinian, should be released, and humanitarian aid must reach those who need it urgently, without obstruction or exploitation."
Drawing on the experience of Northern Ireland, Ms Nicholl concluded that true peace is "built through political courage and truly demonstrable moral leadership in the days to come. We send our best wishes and support to all those working to make that peace real."
