New Artwork Marks L'Derry International City of Peace Status
First Minister Michelle O'Neill has officially unveiled a new public artwork in Derry-Londonderry, a sculpture celebrating the city's status as an International City of Peace.
The First Minister joined guests at a special cross-community event in Ebrington, organised by local Presbyterian Minister Reverend David Latimer, which was attended by more than 100 students from local schools and colleges.
The artwork, an "impressive Terrestrial Globe sculpture," will now stand as a symbol of "peace and hope" in Ebrington. Speaking at the event, the First Minister praised the city's inhabitants: "This city has endured many difficult times, but its people have shown great resilience and courage, and Derry now shines brightly to the world as an example of what can be achieved when people come together on a shared journey towards a lasting peace."
Ms O'Neill thanked Reverend Latimer and all contributors, especially the young people who spoke about their hopes for a "truly united and shared society."
During the celebration, the First Minister also took part in a tree planting ceremony as part of the United Nations-backed People's Peace Forest initiative.
