Simple Lifestyle Changes Key To Managing Menopause – PHA

The Public Health Agency (PHA) is highlighting how simple lifestyle choices can significantly impact women's health and wellbeing during perimenopause and menopause, ahead of World Menopause Day on Saturday, 18 October.

The focus this year is 'Lifestyle Medicine', recognising that around eight in ten women experience troublesome symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats, and brain fog.

Dr Hannah McCourt, Health Improvement Manager at the PHA, stressed that small, sustainable changes in everyday habits are "powerful tools not just for symptom relief, but for helping to protect overall health." She noted that menopause can increase the risk of long-term conditions like heart disease and osteoporosis.

Recognising the amount of conflicting advice available online, the Public Health Dietitians Group has developed two short, evidence-based videos offering practical nutrition advice.

Jill Stewart, a Registered Public Health Dietitian, confirmed there is no such thing as a 'menopause diet', but simple changes can help manage common symptoms. She advises:

• Balanced Diet: Eating a healthy balanced diet rich in wholegrains, fruits and vegetables can help boost the gut microbiome and balance hormone levels.

• Key Nutrients: Nutrients such as calcium, proteins, and vitamin D are crucial for maintaining muscle and bone strength, which can be affected by hormonal changes.

The PHA is urging women, their partners, friends, and colleagues to use these resources to gain clear, trustworthy, and actionable information about health during and beyond the menopause.
