Fire Service Issues Urgent Halloween Safety Warning

As Halloween approaches, the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) is urging the public to take precautions to ensure a safe celebration and prevent spooky fun from turning into a real-life emergency.

NIFRS is reminding people that with costumes, decorations, fireworks, and sparklers all adding to the excitement, a few simple steps can help prevent accidents and potentially save lives.

NIFRS Group Commander Jonathan Gamble commented: "Halloween is a night for fun with friends and family, but it also comes with increased fire and safety risks. By taking simple precautions, you can significantly reduce these risks. We want everyone to enjoy the celebrations without any tragedies spoiling them."

Commander Gamble stressed the importance of planning ahead, suggesting the use of battery-operated candles and inspecting electrical decorations for any faults.

He also issued specific warnings about pyrotechnics, stating: "At this time of year, fireworks and sparklers are very popular but can be very dangerous. Always follow the firework safety code, ensuring they are 'CE' marked to meet EU requirements. Remember to use fireworks in a safe, clear area, keeping children and pets well away."

The NIFRS official also highlighted the dangers of sparklers, which burn at extremely high temperatures. He advised the public to never give sparklers to children under the age of 5 and to always wear gloves when using them.

Regarding costumes, the fire service recommends choosing outfits made from flame-resistant materials, avoiding long trailing fabrics that could catch fire, and ensuring children are visible by carrying glow sticks or torches. A vital safety message is to remember to STOP, DROP and ROLL immediately if a costume catches fire to quickly extinguish the flames.

"Don't let a night of fun become a nightmare," Commander Gamble concluded. "Keep the tricks playful, the treats sweet, and the night safe."
