HMRC Urges Early Filing as Self Assessment Deadline Looms
HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is urging taxpayers to start filing their Self Assessment tax returns for the 2024 to 2025 tax year, with just 100 days remaining until the 31 January 2026 deadline.
More than 3.5 million people have already filed, but starting the process early allows taxpayers to know how much tax they owe sooner and to budget for the payment deadline. Last year, over 97% of returns were filed online.
Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC's Chief Customer Officer, said: "Completing your return now means you know you how much tax you need to pay ahead of the deadline." HMRC highlighted important changes this year, particularly for those who sold assets after 30 October 2024. Due to changed rates of Capital Gains Tax, taxpayers may need to manually work out an adjustment to the automatically calculated tax. Additionally, the new High Income Child Benefit Charge (HICBC) PAYE digital service means thousands of Child Benefit claimants who file only to pay HICBC can now opt out of Self Assessment and pay the charge back through their tax code.
Customers who have already filed can de-register for the following tax year. HMRC also confirmed that the 2025 Winter Fuel Payment (and the Pension Age Winter Heating payment in Scotland) should not be included in the 2024 to 2025 tax return, as these payments will be accounted for in the 2025 to 2026 return.
Finally, HMRC warned customers never to share their login details to avoid falling victim to scams.
