Police Seize Alcohol, Flares And Fireworks from Supporters' Bus
Police in L'Derry conducted a targeted operation on Sunday, 26 October, seizing a number of items following the stop and search of a bus transporting visiting supporters en route to a sporting event in the Lone Moor Road area.
Officers from the Foyleside Neighbourhood Policing Team, supported by Road Policing Interceptors and the Operational Support Department (OSD), intercepted the vehicle in Strabane. The searches resulted in the seizure of a quantity of alcohol, fireworks, and flares. No arrests were made, but the vehicle was refused entry to the event.
The operation followed previous disorder at football matches in the area. Superintendent Sinead McIldowney, Derry City and Strabane District Commander, confirmed that a significant policing operation was put in place to ensure the safety of the local community. Superintendent McIldowney explained that police frequently liaise with all stakeholders and clubs involved in the organisation of sporting events. This collaboration allows police to dynamically assess fixtures and plan to minimise the potential for disorder before, during, and after each match.
She issued a strong warning against disruptive behaviour: "It was unfortunate that genuine football enthusiasts had to miss the match because of the behaviour of others but we take the safety of our local community very seriously.
"Those intent to travel to our city to cause harm, fear disruption or disorder will not be tolerated."
The Superintendent added that the inclusive operation proved that collaboration prevented unnecessary disorder and maintained the safety and enjoyment of all patrons.
Police reminded the public that it is illegal to possess, sell, handle or use fireworks without a licence, and offenders could face fines of up to £5,000.
