ANC Launch New PEACEPLUS Community Capacity Project
A major new initiative designed to foster collaboration and strengthen local communities has been launched by Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council. The project, named WEAVE, is backed by the PEACEPLUS programme and is managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB).
The launch event, titled Weaving Our Future Together – Where Every Thread Counts, successfully brought together a wide array of local stakeholders, including community group representatives and local leaders. The Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Leah Kirkpatrick, delivered the opening address for the initiative. The core of the WEAVE project is built around the guiding themes: We Educate, We Empower, We Engage. The conference served as a platform for participants to exchange experiences, articulate local needs, and actively contribute to shaping how the WEAVE programme will support community development in the Borough in the coming years.
Guest speakers at the launch included Lauri McCusker, Director of The Fermanagh Trust, and Charmain Jones, Women’s Spaces Co-ordinator at the Northern Ireland Rural Women’s Network. Both speakers underscored the immense strength found within the local community and encouraged groups to continue their valuable work.
Mayor Councillor Kirkpatrick highlighted the enthusiasm shown by those attending: "The enthusiasm and participation shown at this event really demonstrates the strength of our local communities. WEAVE is about helping people to learn, connect and grow together so we can build a brighter future for everyone."
The morning session concluded with a networking opportunity at The Weavers Café, which facilitated the sharing of ideas and the creation of new connections, marking the official first steps of the WEAVE journey.
