Six-Month Extension For Legacy Investigations
The Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland (PONI) has been granted a six-month extension to the deadline for reporting on outstanding Troubles-related historical investigations.
This decision, confirmed by the Government, means that the Police Ombudsman can continue to publish conclusions beyond the original cut-off date. Transitional arrangements established under the Northern Ireland (Legacy and Reconciliation) Act 2023 had originally stipulated that reporting on these investigations could not continue after Friday, 31 October 2025. This timeframe has now been formally extended until Wednesday, 30 April 2026.
The extension is designed to ensure that the Police Ombudsman can complete and report on the significant number of historical cases currently under review before the new deadlines take effect.
The Ombudsman confirmed the decision and said that it will continue to communicate with affected families in the coming weeks and months about outstanding reports on these investigations.
