Lurgan Woman Sentenced For £65,000 Benefits Fraud

A 38-year-old woman from Lurgan has been convicted at Craigavon Crown Court for fraudulently claiming more than £65,000 in benefits she was not entitled to.

Kelly Smyth, of Portlec Place, claimed £65,079 in Universal Credit while failing to declare her joint living arrangements. The fraud was uncovered following an investigation by the Department for Communities.

Ms Smyth was sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment, suspended for two years, and has been ordered to repay any outstanding funds wrongfully obtained to the Department.

Drivers warned of delays as Westlink bridge opens
Drivers are today being warned that they could face further delays on the Westlink as a temporary bridge is opened to traffic. The 140 metre bridge will take traffic from the Westlink onto the Grosvenor Road, and will remain in place for the next 18 months until an underpass and new bridge are completed.

Fresh Appeal For Information On Shane Whitla Murder
PSNI detectives investigating the murder of 39-year-old Shane Whitla in Lurgan have issued an appeal for information and witnesses. A post-mortem examination confirmed that Mr Whitla died of a gunshot wound to the chest. According to report, he had also suffered a serious puncture wound to his neck.
