Sinn Féin Calls For Exemption For North From Proposed British ID Card
Sinn Féin MLA Colm Gildernew has called on the British government to scrap its proposed 'Brit Card' scheme, stating that if it is introduced in Britain, an exemption must be granted for Northern Ireland. The Fermanagh and South Tyrone MLA described the mandatory British ID card attempt as "misguided and ill thought out," arguing that the policy was drafted with "no consideration for the rights of Irish citizens or the political realities in the north."
Sinn Féin vowed to oppose any attempt to undermine the Good Friday Agreement.
Alliance Warns Of Winter Health Crisis As Flu Admissions Double
Alliance Health spokesperson Danny Donnelly MLA warned that the health service faces mounting strain this winter following figures showing a doubling in community acquired emergency hospital admissions linked to flu.
The South Antrim MLA stated the figures underscore the urgent need for the Department of Health to strengthen vaccination uptake efforts and provide a clear, evidence-based plan to manage winter pressures.
Donnelly called for the Minister to urgently manage the risk of rising flu levels, noting that prevention and preparation are far better than "another winter of firefighting".
