SDLP Calls For Action On Troubles Permanent Disablement Payment Scheme
SDLP West Tyrone MLA Daniel McCrossan has urged the Executive Office to take immediate action to speed up the application process for the Troubles Permanent Disablement Payment Scheme, which is set to close to new applications in August 2026.
The MLA's call comes amid concerns that many victims are still navigating the lengthy application process, and others may not yet be aware of the compensation they are entitled to before the deadline. Mr. McCrossan highlighted that he has heard "numerous reports of victims and their families struggling to navigate this process, facing months of delay and even being rejected altogether." He stated that failing to address these issues could lead to vital support being missed due to "political failure," and therefore urged the Executive to consider extending the scheme if necessary.
Figures obtained by Mr. McCrossan show the financial progress of the scheme as of October this year: Successful Applications: 2,476; Total Payment Awards: 1,758; Total Value Awarded: nearly £113 million.
The average payments distributed are substantial, including an average backdated payment of £38,920.81, a lump sum payment of £45,756.01, and an average monthly payment of £393.52.
The SDLP representative is calling for the Executive to renew public information efforts and do everything possible to streamline and accelerate the current application process.
