Open Championship Delivered 'Hugely Positive' Economic Impact For NI

Communities Minister Gordon Lyons has welcomed the findings of a new report from the R&A on positive impact of the 153rd Open at Royal Portrush Golf Club.

The event, which was the biggest Open ever staged outside of St Andrews, attracted record visitor numbers and showcased Northern Ireland's north coastto a global audience.

"Today's report from the R&A is hugely positive and demonstrates the economic impact and visitor numbers that sporting events such as these bring to Northern Ireland," the Minister said.

Minister Lyons highlighted that beyond the economic boost, the tournament created a strong legacy for golf and wider community sport.

He referenced initiatives launched earlier this year, including the Road to the Open program, which offered golf taster sessions at 75 primary schools, and the 'Unleash Your Drive' initiative at 20 primary schools.

The Minister emphasised the value of sport in encouraging activity, fostering community connections, and contributing to healthier lives. He concluded that the tournament and its associated initiatives will deliver a lasting legacy that continues well into the future.
