SDLP Policing Board member Colin McGrath MLA has asserted that the fall in PSNI officer numbers and lack of general resources are being keenly felt in communities across the North.

Ahead of an SDLP Opposition Day motion on Tuesday, the South Down MLA said that under-resourcing impacts everything from neighbourhood policing to the capacity to tackle issues like violence against women. He warned that policing is a pivotal achievement of the peace process that cannot be allowed to decline further, urging the Justice Minister to present a clear and credible plan to increase officer numbers and make the PSNI more representative.

A question tabled by the North Belfast MLA revealed there are more than 80 vacancies as of 11 November, figures she called alarming. Ms Ní Chuilín stressed that these gaps point to widespread shortfalls in support for the most vulnerable people, including children, the elderly, and those with mental health needs. She called on the Department of Health to treat the filling of these posts as urgent to prevent existing staff from being stretched and ensure service users receive the necessary care.

PPS Directs No Prosecution in City Hall Portrait Investigation

The PSNI has issued a statement following a decision by the Public Prosecution Service (PPS) not to prosecute an individual investigated in connection with allegations of criminal damage to a portrait at Belfast City Hall in October 2024. The PPS directed 'no prosecution' after determining there was no reasonable prospect of conviction for any criminal offence on the evidence available. Police reiterated their duty to conduct investigations where criminal offences are suspected, following the standard procedure, and emphasised that prosecutorial decisions are made independently by the PPS, reaffirming their commitment to treat everyone equally before the law.
