Derry City & Strabane Police Launch Operation Season's Greetings

Police in Derry City & Strabane have launched their annual Operation Season's Greetings, which aims to keep the public safe in the run-up to, and over, the Christmas and New Year period.

The operation will see increased police visibility and patrols across the District, with uniformed and plain-clothed officers focusing on busy areas including shopping centres and nightlife venues, and public transport hubs and car parks.

Derry City & Strabane Chief Inspector Cherith Craig confirmed the operation's main priorities: "The focus is on public safety, road safety and tackling violence against women and girls, alongside preventing thefts and antisocial behaviour in busy shopping and nightlife areas."

Chief Inspector Craig issued a stern warning regarding road safety, noting the tragic loss of 69 people on Northern Ireland roads in 2024. She appealed to the public to remember the 'Fatal Five':

• Don't drink or take drugs and drive.

• Slow down.

• Don't be careless.

• Always wear your seat belt.

Regarding domestic abuse, which often sees increased reports during the Christmas period, the PSNI message is clear: "We are here for you. Please reach out if you need help.”

The operation is supported by key community and business partners, including Derry and Strabane PCSP Chair, Alderman Keith Kerrigan, who stated the partnership is proud to support the operation, focusing particularly on preventing drink-driving and tackling violence against women and girls. Holly Reed from the Foyle Women's Information Network reinforced that safety is a shared responsibility, encouraging everyone to look out for one another. Translink's Northern Area Manager, Sarah Simpson, confirmed that safety remains the top priority with the return of popular late-night bus and train services. And Jim Roddy of the City Centre Initiative welcomed the campaign, noting its role in supporting businesses and city centre users, and maintaining the area's Purple Flag status for safety and welcoming experience.
