Mid And East Antrim Council Agrees To Rename Prince Andrew Way

Mid and East Antrim Borough Council has secured cross-party support for an Alliance Party motion to begin the process of renaming Prince Andrew Way in Carrickfergus.

Council officers will now start work to map out a clear process, including a public consultation, to secure a name change that best showcases the local Carrickfergus community.

Carrickfergus Alliance Councillor Lauren Gray welcomed the decision: "This has been an ongoing issue for many in Carrickfergus and it is welcome that we will now be able to begin the process of renaming the street. The voices of the people of Carrickfergus must be heard, which is why I'm delighted a mechanism for a public consultation will be included."

Councillor Gray also noted the timing of the discussion as the 16 Days against Gender-Based Violence campaign is about to begin, expressing sympathy for victims and survivors of abuse.

Alliance Councillor Aaron Skinner added that many residents feel "deeply uneasy" about continuing to honour Andrew Mountbatten, stating: "It is clear that he doesn't reflect the values of our community. Given everything that has come to light and continues to come to light, the name needs to change."

The Council officers' work will now focus on creating a clear, transparent process for consultation and name selection that reflects the views of the people of Carrickfergus.
