Police Seize 58 Uninsured Vehicles In One Week Across NI
Police officers across Northern Ireland seized 58 uninsured vehicles between 10 and 16 November, as part of the UK-wide Operation Drive Insured campaign, supported by the Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB).
Superintendent Jonathan Wilson highlighted the scale of the detection: "Normally, on average, we seize around 30 vehicle for no insurance every week. During the recent operation, we seized 58." The majority of drivers stopped were issued a Fixed Penalty Notice, which carries a £200 fine and six penalty points on their licence. Officers also made detections for other motoring offences, with those motorists being reported to the Public Prosecution Service.
Superintendent Wilson stressed the financial impact of this crime, noting that the MIB estimates uninsured and hit-and-run drivers cost the economy £2.4 million.
Superintendent Wilson said that the PSNI's message to drivers remains clear: "Check you have the correct insurance in place before you take to the roads. When we detect an uninsured driver, the vehicle will be seized on the spot and they will face the full rigour of the law."
The police have confirmed that while the UK-wide operation has concluded, they will continue efforts to remove uninsured vehicles from Northern Ireland's roads.
