Minister Reaffirms Commitment To Paid Safe Leave For Domestic Abuse Victims

Economy Minister Dr Caoimhe Archibald has confirmed her commitment to implementing the provisions of the Domestic Abuse (Safe Leave) Act (NI) 2022, creating a new statutory employment right for victims and survivors of domestic abuse.

Speaking on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, the Minister stated her intention to have the necessary legislation in place before the end of the current Assembly mandate.

This legislation will create a new right for victims of domestic abuse to access at least 10 days paid leave for the purpose of dealing with issues related to the abuse.

Minister Archibald stressed the critical role of workplaces in supporting victims: "Work can provide a safe space for those who are suffering from domestic abuse. Work can also help workers maintain their financial independence. I remain committed to the introduction of a new statutory right to paid safe leave before the end of the Assembly mandate."

The Minister expressed hope that this new right will make it easier for victims and survivors to access vital support. She confirmed she will continue to work collaboratively with trade unions, employer representatives, and support organisations to ensure the new legislation is implemented effectively.
