PSNI Launches Winter Anti-Drink And Drug Drive Operation
The PSNI has launched its winter anti-drink and drug driving campaign in Belfast, with Chief Superintendent Sam Donaldson issuing a stark warning: "Drink or drug drive, and you are risking lives."
Chief Superintendent Donaldson confirmed a proactive policing operation will run across Northern Ireland to significantly increase roadside testing and implement targeted vehicle stops for drivers suspected of being under the influence.
Increased Enforcement and Drugwipe Deployment
The operation will feature a coordinated effort, including:
- Road Policing Unit and Interceptor Teams.
- Local and Neighbourhood Policing Teams.
- Tactical Support Group colleagues.
- Coordinated road safety operations in border counties with An Garda Síochána Traffic Corp.
"Authorised vehicle checkpoints will be in operation as a very visible, physical deterrent," Chief Superintendent Donaldson stated. This year, a number of Roads Policing, Tactical Support Group, and local District officers will also have Drugwipes at their disposal. Since the pilot commenced in August 2024, approximately 150 tests have been conducted, with 79 testing positive for cannabis and/or cocaine—an alarming 50% positive return rate.
During 2024's campaign, 6,265 preliminary breath tests were conducted, resulting in 298 arrests for suspected drink or drug driving. Provisional figures for the period 1 January to 30 November 2025 show a total of 2,582 arrests for these offences across Northern Ireland.
Chief Superintendent Donaldson described these figures as "disturbing", appealing directly to the public: "Our appeal is to anyone planning a night out, planning to drive, is don't drink any alcohol or take any drugs at all.
"Drink or drug driving is one of the ‘Fatal Five’, which are the main reasons people are dying on our roads."
The PSNI is also appealing for the public to report anyone they suspect of drink or drug driving immediately on 101, or 999 in an emergency. Reports can be made anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
