Water Service announces further wastewater treatment work

Construction work has begun on a new £1 million Wastewater Treatment Works to serve the village of Blackskull in Co Down.

The scheme will involve the construction of a new wastewater treatment works on the existing site and is scheduled to take one year to complete.

Trevor Haslett, Director of Development, said: "The population in Blackskull has risen over the past 10 years and there is considerable potential for development within the area. This new facility will provide the people of Blackskull with modern sewerage services, which are designed to serve the development needs of the village for the next 20 years.

"This is one of a significant number of wastewater treatment facilities where work is due to commence over the next three years and demonstrates government’s commitment to protecting the environment. The scheme will improve the quality of treated effluent discharge, ensuring compliance with EU standards."

Today's announcement comes a day after work began on a Wastewater Treatment in Co Armagh.

The scheme, which will serve the village of Lislea, will involve the construction of a new facility on a remote green field site approximately 100m away from the nearest development and will include the construction of a sewage pumping station, positioned at a low point, to supply the new treatment works.

Around 500m of new gravity sewers and pumping main will also be laid to improve and augment the existing sewer network in the village.
