Brewery closure fails the west Belfast community: Adams

Interbrew has failed the needs of the community and the workforce over its decision to close its west Belfast plant, West Belfast MP Gerry Adams has said.

Despite last-ditch efforts by Mr Adams, the British and Irish governments, and local trade unions, it has been confirmed that Bass Ireland Ulster Brewery on the Glen Road will cease production next January with a total loss of 85 jobs.

However, headcount at the Omagh-based customer service and distribution operations will not be affected by the move.

Mr Adams said: "We are disappointed with the decision by Interbrew to end brewing at the Glen Road site. We believe that this decision fails the needs of the community and the workforce.

"Over the past number of years we have made advances in spearheading the regeneration of west Belfast. The loss of these jobs is a blow to this regeneration."

Economy Minister Barry Gardiner voiced his own disappointment, adding that Invest NI were negotiating with Interbrew and Bass Ireland to attempt to "minimise the adverse impact" the decision will have on the workforce and Northern Ireland's economy.
