Doherty omitted from NI World Cup squad

Northern Ireland manager Lawrie Sanchez has named his first competitive squad for next month's opening World Cup qualifiers against Poland and Wales.

Wolves defender Mark Clyde is the only upcapped player named in the squad however the major talking point among fans is the exclusion of Bristol City's Tommy Doherty.

The 24-year-old midfielder has played only one game since under Sanchez took charge last year, and it is thought that his failure to join up with the Northern Ireland squad in recent matches, despite injury, is the reason for his exclusion.

Elsewhere, it is 'as you where' for Northern Ireland with Sunderland defender George McCartney missing the opening fixture at home to Poland through suspension.

Northern Ireland face Poland at Windsor Park on Saturday September 4 before travelling to Wales to face Mark Hughes' side at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium five days later.

The NI squad is: Carroll (Manchester United), Taylor (Birmingham City), Baird (Southampton), McCartney (Sunderland), Capaldi (Plymouth Argyle), Williams (MK Dons), Craigan (Motherwell), Murdock (Hibernian), Hughes (Newcastle United), Clyde (Wolverhampton Wanderers), Hughes (Crystal Palace), Johnson (Birmingham City), Gillespie (Leicester City), Sonner (Peterborough United), Whitley (Sunderland), Mulryne (Norwich City), Elliott (Hull City), Healy (Preston), Smith (Preston), Hamilton (Portadown), McVeigh (Norwich City), Jones (Crewe Alexandra), Quinn (Willem II).
