New £750k Moylinn East Bridge Opens To Reconnect Craigavon
Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has officially opened the new Moylinn East pedestrian and cycle bridge in Craigavon, marking the completion of a £750,000 investment in the area's active travel network.
The new structure restores a key connection for residents, commuters, and school pupils, crossing the busy A3 Lake Road dual carriageway between the Tullygally and Lake roundabouts. The previous bridge was removed in March 2023 after it was found to be beyond economic repair, leaving local users with a significant detour for over two years.
The bridge serves as a primary artery for those travelling between:
- South Lake Leisure Centre
- Craigavon City Park and Lakes
- Rushmere Shopping Centre
The project also strengthens a key section of the National Cycling Network, supporting the Department for Infrastructure’s goal of providing high-quality, accessible alternatives to car travel. Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins said: "I am delighted to open the new Moylinn pedestrian and cycle bridge which replaces the previous bridge and provides the community, visitors and local school children with a superb pedestrian and cycle link.
"Creating cleaner and greener travel options is one of my department's seven Foundations for a Better Future, and this bridge demonstrates my ongoing commitment to walking, wheeling and cycling. Schemes such as this provide excellent healthy and environmentally friendly transport choices for people who wish to leave the car behind for some of their shorter local journeys."
The bridge opening is part of a wider focus on the Craigavon "Black Paths" network. Upgrades are currently progressing on several sections, including:
- The path between St Anthony's Church and the new bridge.
- The route from South Lakes Leisure Centre to Drumgor Centre, continuing towards the Curly Wurly Bridge.
Minister Kimmins expressed her thanks to the local community for their patience during the construction period, which involved significant off-site fabrication before the main span was lifted into place earlier this year.
