The Ulster Unionist Party has voiced its support for a new Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) policy aimed at increasing transparency within the criminal justice system. Under the new measures, the PSNI will routinely release the custody images of offenders who have been sentenced to a minimum of 12 months in prison.

The party described the move as a vital step in reinforcing public confidence and ensuring that the consequences of criminal activity are visible to the community. Justice Spokesperson Doug Beattie MC MLA welcomed the change: "The news that the PSNI is to routinely release custody images of those who are found guilty of a crime and given a minimum of 12 months custody will be welcomed by victims and survivors, as well as witnesses. The Victims of Crime Commissioner – Geraldine Hanna – is absolutely right when she says that justice does not only have to be done, but it must be seen to be done.

"This fundamental change from the PSNI will act as a deterrent for many who get themselves involved in crime. Even more so, it will give confidence to the public by outlining positive criminal justice outcomes within their communities and wider society. It is important, that apart from some age restriction, no crime or group of people are exempt from this policy; it must apply regardless of religion, sexual orientation, or ethnic background."

Mr Beattie also confirmed his intention to discuss the policy further during an upcoming meeting with the Chief Constable. The meeting is also expected to cover the PSNI's ongoing strategies for addressing violence against women and girls.
