NIE Networks Launches Recruitment Drive for 2026 Apprentice Academy

NIE Networks has officially opened applications for its 2026 Apprentice Academy, offering aspiring engineers and technicians a gateway into the evolving energy sector.

The recruitment drive is part of the company's ambitious "Big Network Rebuild" programme, aimed at future-proofing Northern Ireland's electricity infrastructure.

The Academy is seeking applicants for two distinct pathways:

1. Craftsperson Apprenticeship

This route is open to individuals aged 16 and over (by September 2026). Successful candidates will train for specialized roles including:

• Overhead Linesperson

• Underground Cable Jointer

• Plant Maintenance Electrician

• Plant Workshop Electrical and Mechanical Fitter

Requirements: Applicants must hold or expect to achieve at least three GCSEs at grades A*–D (4–9), including Maths, English, and a STEM-related subject. Apprentices will earn Level 2 and 3 vocational qualifications through NIE Networks' dedicated training schools.

2. Higher-Level Apprenticeship (Electrical Engineering)

Targeted at those aged 18 and over, this pathway combines practical experience with academic study.

• Qualification: Apprentices work toward a Foundation Degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering in partnership with Northern Regional College.

• Requirements: GCSE Maths and English (Grade C/4 or above) plus either three A-Levels (A*–C) including Maths or Physics, or a relevant BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Engineering.

John Burns, Technical Training Manager at NIE Networks, highlighted the significance of the intake: "It's an exciting time within the energy sector and within NIE Networks as we future proof the electricity network within Northern Ireland. We have recently launched our major investment program 'The Big Network Rebuild' where we will be constructing new overhead line networks, installing new underground cable networks and Substations."

NIE Networks has emphasised its desire to build a diverse workforce and particularly encourages applications from women, ethnic minorities, and individuals with disabilities. The academy also welcomes "career changers" looking to transition into the energy industry from other professional backgrounds.

Applications are now live for the September 2026 intake.
