Major Revitalisation Project Approved For Royal Hillsborough

The historic Georgian character of Royal Hillsborough is set for a significant transformation following the unanimous approval of a new public realm scheme by Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council's Planning Committee on Monday 12 January 2026.

This ambitious project aims to dramatically modernise the aesthetic and functionality of the village's streets and communal areas. While the initiative promises a major uplift, the council has stressed that the work will be carried out with a focus on protecting the unique heritage and historical importance of the area. This development represents the inaugural phase of the 'Destination Royal Hillsborough' strategy, which is being delivered as part of the broader Belfast Regional City Deal.

Extensive upgrades are planned for several key locations, including Main Street, The Square, Dromore Road, Ballynahinch Street, Lisburn Street/Lisburn Road, and Park Street/Park Lane. The enhancements will include the installation of heritage-style street furniture, improved paving, clearer signage for wayfinding, and upgraded drainage systems.

Alderman James Tinsley, Planning Chairman, commented on the approval: "The council submitted the planning application for the Royal Hillsborough Public Realm scheme following extensive consultation with stakeholders including statutory agencies, local residents and businesses. This scheme will significantly enhance the village landscape. Pedestrian safety is central to the design, and the scheme will also support future traffic management measures."

He added: "I look forward to seeing the completed project, which will deliver improved pavements, heritage-style street furniture, enhanced drainage and clearer wayfinding signage and create a safer, more attractive village for residents and visitors."

With planning permission now secured, the local authority will progress to the final design stages before beginning the procurement process to appoint specialist contractors. To minimise disruption, the physical works will be managed in phases, ensuring that the village stays open for business and accessible to the public throughout the construction period.
