Alliance MLA Highlights Persistent Inequalities In Latest Wellbeing Report

Alliance Party spokesperson Paula Bradshaw MLA has warned that while headline figures suggest Northern Ireland remains a favourable place to live, significant inequalities continue to affect the most vulnerable in society.

Her comments follow the publication of the Executive Office’s Individual Wellbeing in Northern Ireland 2024 to 2025 report.

The annual report provides a snapshot of the region’s quality of life, measuring metrics such as happiness, life satisfaction, anxiety, and sense of purpose. While the data shows that overall wellbeing levels have remained broadly stable despite ongoing economic and social pressures, the South Belfast MLA emphasised that these positive outcomes are not being felt by everyone.

The findings illustrate a clear divide in how different groups experience life in Northern Ireland. According to the report, individuals living with a disability consistently report lower levels of happiness and life satisfaction compared to those without. Similarly, those residing in the most deprived areas continue to experience poorer standards of wellbeing than those in more affluent circumstances.

Ms Bradshaw noted that these gaps are persistent and serve as a clear indicator of where government intervention is most required. She argued that improving the quality of life for all citizens requires a shift towards preventative measures and early investment.

The Alliance MLA stressed that stability for individuals relies on access to essential services, including secure housing, quality healthcare, and robust mental health support. She believes these practical steps are necessary to reduce anxiety and raise living standards for those under the greatest pressure.

"Improving the wellbeing of all, right across our society, means focusing on prevention," Ms Bradshaw stated. "It requires early investment in the things that give people stability, including good healthcare, secure housing, education and accessible mental health support. These are practical steps that can reduce anxiety and raise living standards, particularly for those under the greatest pressure."

The report’s findings have prompted renewed calls for the Northern Ireland Executive to deliver on long-promised social reforms. Ms Bradshaw described the data as a "dire reminder" of the need for a comprehensive Anti-Poverty Strategy and a dedicated Disability Strategy.

She concluded by stating that tackling poverty must be the central pillar of any effort to improve the region's quality of life. Ms Bradshaw warned that wellbeing does not improve by accident and urged the Executive to match the evidence provided in the report with a commitment to meaningful, coordinated action.
