NI Water Announces 27 New Apprenticeship Roles For 2026

NI Water is marking Apprenticeship Week 2026 by inviting applications for 27 new entry-level roles starting this September.

Running until to 6 February, the week celebrates the impact apprentices have on local communities and the economy while highlighting the diverse career paths available within the water industry.

The 2026 intake features a broad spectrum of opportunities including Water Utilities, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, and Engineering Plant Operators. Candidates can also apply for positions in Science, Construction Engineering, Hydraulic Modelling, and Internal Audit. From the outset, successful applicants receive a competitive salary alongside fully funded qualifications and a structured framework for long-term career progression.

Helen Devlin, Head of HR Operations at NI Water, emphasised the value these roles bring to the organisation: "We very much champion our apprentices here at NI Water. They are energetic contributors, bringing new ideas and adaptability to address industry challenges. As a business, we also know that apprenticeships not only boost productivity and quality, but also foster staff retention, loyalty, and continuous improvement."

One current apprentice, Ewan Leckey from Strabane, shared his experience after joining the company as an M&E Craft Fitter Apprentice following his sixth-form studies. He noted that the opportunity to work with complex equipment like gearboxes, motors, and pumps, while solving technical problems, was a major draw for him.

Ewan Leckey described his experience within the scheme: "I discovered this NI Water Apprenticeship through my cousin, who inspired me with his experiences, especially the chance to work with equipment like pumps, motors, and gearboxes. This hands-on learning and the opportunity to continually solve complex problems drew me in.

"A typical day could mean working with a mentor and going anywhere in the North West, working on clean water and wastewater sites, tackling tasks such as unblocking pumps or installing motors. The role offers constant learning, from multiskilling with electricians to completing various training courses like Water Hygiene and Forklift Training, all of which boost my confidence.

"My ambition is to master M&E Services, mentor others, and become known for innovative problem-solving. It is a great apprenticeship with great people that look after you. You are learning while you work and every day you learn something new. You go to college once a week which gives you more confidence within your work.

"I highly recommend applying for this year's apprenticeship scheme for its supportive environment and excellent training, both on the job and at college."
