Belfast Businesses Urged To Boost Accessibility Ahead Of Record Summer
Belfast is preparing for its busiest summer on record, prompting a call for local hospitality and tourism providers to enhance their inclusive services.
A free workshop titled 'Embrace the Inclusive Spirit' will be held at Titanic Belfast on Tuesday 17 February, from 9am to 2pm, to help businesses tap into the UK's £249 billion "purple pound" disability market.
The event is hosted by Belfast City Council in collaboration with Tourism Northern Ireland, Visit Belfast, and Titanic Belfast. It is specifically designed for city-based tour guides, event planners, and tourism organisations.
Councillor Ian McLaughlin, Chair of the City Growth and Regeneration Committee, emphasised the importance of the event ahead of major international draws.
He stated: "With Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann expected to bring at least 800,000 visitors into Belfast from 2-9 August, making sure everyone can access what our city has to offer is crucial. This is an opportunity for businesses to learn about practical steps they can take to make their products more accessible, to hear the first-hand experiences of disabled travellers and to gain insight into marketing techniques to help reach new customers." He added: "Belfast is on the world stage this year and it's vital our spaces and places give everyone the chance to participate fully. I would encourage any businesses keen to make the most of this year's opportunities to come along and see what this event can offer them."
The seminar will be led by Jamie Shields, co-founding director of Disabled by Society and a registered blind disability advocate. He will share his personal perspective on navigating the world with ADHD and autism. Other speakers include comedian Emer Maguire, who will discuss her experiences as an autistic performer, and Cathelijne Denekamp from the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, who will provide global insights into world-class visitor experiences.
The day will also feature the second Embrace the Inclusive Spirit Inclusive Tourism Awards, which recognise local organisations nominated by the public for their accessibility efforts.
The council has also highlighted that small grants of up to £500 remain available for eligible businesses and social enterprises to fund improvements such as sensory packs, staff training, and accessible website development. These vouchers are currently being distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
Registration for the seminar is available online at www.belfastcity.gov.uk/Embrace-the-Inclusive-Spirit.
