Alliance Councillors Warn of Economic Blow Over Boucher Road Event Ban
Alliance Party councillors have criticised a decision by Belfast City Council to cease hosting major events at Boucher Road Playing Fields after 2027, describing the move as "short-sighted".
The backlash follows a council meeting where an Alliance proposal to temporarily maintain the site as a concert venue—until a viable alternative is established—was defeated by other political parties. Councillors Jenna Maghie and Micky Murray warned that the decision could jeopardise Belfast's reputation as an international music destination and lead to a significant loss in local revenue.
Councillor Maghie highlighted the financial stakes, noting that the venue is one of the largest outdoor spaces in Northern Ireland. She stated that events at the playing fields generate £300,000 in direct income for the council, while a single weekend of concerts can inject approximately £10 million into the broader local economy. "The closure of Boucher Road as an event space after 2027, without a suitable replacement identified, is short-sighted," Cllr Maghie said. "Failure to secure a future venue to host these events will not only hit Belfast's energetic and vibrant night scene but also have a detrimental economic impact."
She added that music tourism is currently worth over £135 million to Northern Ireland, with Boucher Road contributing a substantial portion of that figure.
Councillor Micky Murray emphasised that as a UNESCO City of Music, Belfast has a duty to support both its grassroots talent and its ability to attract global stars. He expressed concern that the city might return to a time when major international artists bypassed Belfast entirely.
"While there are local concerns regarding noise levels and anti-social behaviour during events, we have been engaging with the local community and promoters to discuss how these would be addressed," Cllr Murray explained. "It's important when organising these events that local voices are heard and listened to."
Following the vote, council officers are expected to produce a report detailing potential alternative sites for large-scale events and a comprehensive analysis of the economic impact such gatherings have on the city.
