SDLP Proposes Social Media Restrictions For Under-16s
The SDLP has tabled an Opposition Day motion calling for the introduction of age-based restrictions on social media use for children under 16.
Speaking ahead of the motion on Tuesday, East Derry MLA Cara Hunter argued that the rise of deepfakes and the exploitation of AI have created an urgent need for government intervention. The proposal suggests that prohibiting access for younger teenagers should form part of a wider regulatory framework designed to clean up digital spaces.
Ms Hunter highlighted that other countries have already moved toward age-based bans and suggested that Northern Ireland must consider every available option to protect both children and the integrity of democratic discourse. Cara Hunter MLA stated: "We have repeatedly seen recently how harmful social media can be, not only for our young people, but for everyone. The creation of deepfakes and exploitation of AI has intensified discussions around keeping our children safe online, following proactive action from countries who have successfully introduced age-based restrictions when it comes to social media. Across platforms and age groups, deliberate misinformation and disinformation are distorting political and societal discourse."
The SDLP's approach includes a call for "phased or graduated" restrictions, acknowledging that a singular ban may not be a complete solution. The party has been conducting a consultation process, which included a roundtable discussion with young people and engagement with parents, to develop an evidence-based strategy.
Ms Hunter continued: "The SDLP wants to see engagement with parents and young people, backed by regulation and proper enforcement for social media companies who have allowed online spaces to degenerate into a lawless wasteland. We cannot allow children to be exposed to widespread harmful material and subjected to bullying, grooming or other exploitation."
The motion coincides with an ongoing UK Government consultation regarding online harms and child safety. Ms Hunter described the national focus on this issue as a positive step, noting that the SDLP's motion aims to address the "dark corners" of social media and hold platforms accountable for the content they host.
