Resurfacing Works Begin on £635,000 Rathfriland Road Scheme
Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has confirmed the start of a £635,000 resurfacing project on the Newry Road in Rathfriland. The scheme covers a 1,450-metre stretch of the A25, running from Grocers Road to the Greenhill Road junction.
The project is designed to improve the structural strength and surface quality of the carriageway. Announcing the investment, Minister Kimmins said: "This is a substantial investment for the Rathfriland area which will deliver significant benefits for local businesses, residents and road users. The investment demonstrates my commitment to improving our road network, which is vital for connecting our businesses and communities. This work will greatly improve the strength and surface quality of this section of the road network to the benefit of local residents, businesses and those travelling in the Rathfriland area. Work is expected to be substantially completed by Friday 3 April 2026. I would like to thank residents, local businesses, and commuters for their patience while this essential infrastructure work is carried out."
To allow the works to proceed safely, a daily road closure will be in place from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday. These closures are scheduled for two periods: from Monday 9 February to Friday 20 February, and from Monday 9 March to Friday 3 April.
Additionally, a full continuous closure will take place from Monday 23 February to Saturday 7 March to allow for repairs to a verge slippage.
A signed diversion will be in operation, directing traffic via the Hilltown Road, Castlewellan Road, and Finnard Road. While the Department for Infrastructure has planned the works to minimise disruption, motorists are advised to expect delays and allow extra time for their journeys.
The scheme is expected to be substantially complete by Friday 3 April 2026, though this timeline is subject to weather conditions.
