Five-Year Low For Northern Ireland Petrol Prices

Petrol prices at Northern Ireland forecourts have dropped to 124.2p per litre, the lowest level recorded since May 2021, following a year of relative stability. Diesel remains unchanged at an average of 131.9p per litre.

Prices are still well below the peak seen in June 2022 after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, when average unleaded reached 189.9p per litre and diesel 197.5p per litre.

Karen Smyth, Director of Infrastructure and Sustainability at the Consumer Council, said: "The price of petrol and diesel is made up of several factors which may vary from one retailer to another. We have always seen a variation in pump prices across Northern Ireland. Price differences often reflect when fuel was purchased by retailers and the volume bought at a given price."

The Consumer Council monitors fuel prices across Northern Ireland each week and publishes the figures every Thursday. Its free online Fuel Price Checker allows motorists to view the highest, lowest and average petrol and diesel prices in their area to help secure the best value.

From 2 February, the UK Government's Fuel Finder Scheme also came into effect, requiring forecourts across the UK to submit up-to-date pump prices and to report any changes within 30 minutes.

Commenting on the Fuel Finder Scheme, Head of Transport Policy at the Consumer Council, Michelle Kelly, said: "We welcome this open data scheme which is a significant extension of the type of transparency the Consumer Council has sought to create for Northern Ireland consumers through our Fuel Price Checker."

Consumers can continue to check local petrol and diesel prices using the Consumer Council's Fuel Price Checker to find competitive options nearby.
