Sinn Féin Calls for Standardised Mental Health Data System

Sinn Féin's spokesperson for mental health, Órlaithí Flynn MLA, has stated that the absence of reliable and uniform data in the north is preventing the efficient delivery of support services. The comments come as the party prepares to bring a motion before the Assembly, urging the implementation of a single, standardised system for mental health data.

Ms Flynn highlighted that the lack of clear information regarding staffing gaps, waiting lists, and overall service demand makes it difficult to manage or enhance existing provisions. She noted that while such systems are already utilised in other regions across these islands, the north has yet to adopt a similar approach despite an increasing need for mental health assistance.

According to the MLA, a unified data system would empower health trusts to better organise and provide help for individuals facing mental health challenges.

"Without accurate and consistent data on waiting times, staff shortages and the level of demand for services, it is impossible to properly plan, deliver or improve mental health services," said Ms Flynn.

"Despite being commonplace in other parts of these islands, and with demand for mental health support rising, the north remains without such a system.

"That's why Sinn Féin is calling for a single, standardised mental health data system, allowing health trusts to better plan and deliver support for those experiencing poor mental health.

"People who are struggling and their families deserve to be assured that the care they are receiving is compassionate, appropriate and timely."
