PSNI Detects 779 Speeding Drivers During Severe Weather Warnings

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has released alarming figures showing that 779 drivers were detected speeding over just two days this year, despite official weather warnings for heavy rain.

The detections, which spanned all 11 policing districts, occurred on 30 January and 6 February—dates when hazardous driving conditions were widely forecast.

One motorist was clocked travelling at 97mph on 30 January. Superintendent Jonathan Wilson described the speeds as "shocking," particularly given the increased risk of aquaplaning and reduced visibility associated with the weather warnings in place at the time.

The detections were part of Operation Lifesaver, a dedicated road safety initiative involving both patrolling officers and Road Safety Camera Vans. In addition to speeding, police identified several other serious motoring offences, including:

• Driving under the influence of drink or drugs

• Using a mobile phone while driving

• Failing to wear a seatbelt

Superintendent Wilson emphasised that driving requires "100 per cent of our attention," noting that even a momentary lapse in focus during poor weather can have fatal consequences.

The "Fatal Five" Road Safety Appeal

As unsettled weather continues, the PSNI is urging all road users to commit to the "Fatal Five"—the five key behaviours that most frequently lead to serious or fatal collisions:

1. Don't Drink or Take Drugs and Drive: Impairment significantly slows reaction times.

2. Slow Down: Especially when road surfaces are wet or saturated.

3. Don't Get Careless: Maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front.

4. Always Wear Your Seatbelt: It is the simplest way to protect yourself in a crash.

5. Stay Off Your Mobile Phone: Distraction is a leading cause of avoidable accidents.

The police warning serves as a stark reminder that road safety is a shared responsibility. "Do not think the worst will not happen to you," Wilson added, "because it can."
