Kimmins Commits To Fermanagh Road Safety And Infrastructure Upgrades
Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has completed a site visit to County Fermanagh, engaging with residents and elected representatives in Belcoo and Derrygonnelly to address local road safety and infrastructure concerns.
The visit highlighted the Department's ongoing investment in the Fermanagh road network, which has seen over £3.5 million spent on structural improvements during the 2025/26 financial year to date.
In Belcoo, the Minister met with community members to discuss a requested footway extension and broader safety issues. While the Department has already implemented a part-time 20mph speed limit at St Columban's Primary School on the Lattone Road and updated village speed limit signage, Minister Kimmins acknowledged the necessity for further intervention. Short-term safety measures at Holywell Corner are currently being assessed by Department officials.
The Minister also visited Derrygonnelly GAC to view the club's recently expanded facilities. Addressing the lack of a pedestrian connection between the club and the main village, she confirmed that officials are exploring potential measures to create a safe footway for residents visiting the community asset. Minister Liz Kimmins commented on the regional priorities: "I am committed to doing all I can to improve our roads. In the Fermanagh area over £3.5m has been spent on improving the structure of the road network in 2025/26 to date and I am pleased to confirm that I have secured additional funding for vital repairs across the north. We have also commenced a programme of the renewal of road markings in Fermanagh and road junctions in the Belcoo area will be completed as part of this work."
The visit forms part of a wider focus on road safety and maintenance across Northern Ireland. In addition to the structural investment, the Minister highlighted a secured increase in funding for vital repairs across the region and a targeted programme for renewing road markings at key junctions.
Following the Derrygonnelly visit, the Minister added: "I have asked my officials to consider what measures may be possible to help the residents of Derrygonnelly visit this important community asset safely. It is important to be on the ground meeting people and to listen to the views of local communities to address the needs of all road users."
The Department for Infrastructure is expected to provide further updates on the Holywell Corner safety assessment and the Derrygonnelly footway feasibility study in the coming months.
