Belfast's City Quays Gardens Honoured with Major Safety Award
City Quays Gardens in Belfast has been presented with a special safety award by a leading industry body in recognition of its excellence in creating a safe and inclusive environment.
The Secured by Design (SBD) Recognition Certificate was awarded to Belfast Harbour Police by Michael Brooke, Deputy Chief Operating Officer at Police Crime Prevention Initiatives (Police CPI), the parent body of the official police security initiative.
The project began when Belfast Harbour Police worked with SBD to transform a former car park situated between the historic Harbour Office and the City Quays office buildings into a high-quality public garden. The collaboration focused on ensuring the area remains safe for local residents, office workers, and the general public.
Following SBD and Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) principles, the developers created an open garden with clear sightlines, integrated pathways, CCTV, and strategic lighting. The design also incorporated elements from the Safer Parks campaign to address Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG). By removing hidden corners and dead ends, the project has successfully reduced opportunities for harassment and created a more welcoming space.
A bespoke SBD Recognition Certificate was created specifically for City Quays Gardens, as it met the rigorous safety and design standards usually reserved for larger building developments. Michael Daly, Chief Officer with Belfast Harbour Police, said: "We are delighted to have been recognised for our contribution towards the development of City Quays Gardens through this special award from Secured by Design, which acknowledges the careful planning which has gone into making this a safe and welcoming public space for the people of Belfast."
"Since opening almost a year ago the Gardens have become a popular attraction for local residents, office workers and the public, who are able to benefit from the welcoming environment which has been enhanced by the input of our key design partners, including Secured By Design, among others."
Michael Brooke of Police CPI added: "The Gardens are an excellent example of how applying Secured by Design principles and thoughtful environmental design can actively reduce opportunities for crime while creating a space that feels warm and welcoming, with a particular consideration for women and girls."
Additionally, the Secured by Design Gold award—the scheme's highest standard—was jointly awarded to Lady Pirrie House and Dargan House at the Loftlines development in the Titanic Quarter. This was achieved through the collaborative efforts of Watkin Jones, GRAHAM, Lacuna Developments, and TODD Architects.
Regarding the Loftlines award, Mr Daly added: "Creating places where people feel secure is central to community wellbeing, and developments built to this standard make a meaningful contribution to supporting policing and fostering safer neighbourhoods."
