Council Launches Community Engagement for Armagh Gaol Transformation
Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council has announced a new community engagement process designed to determine the future of the Armagh Gaol Transformation Project.
The move follows the site's identification as a priority in the Armagh Place Plan, which aims to secure the building's long-term sustainability as a multifunctional space.
The Gaol is regarded as one of Armagh's most significant historical assets. Overlooking The Mall, the landmark offers a unique opportunity for heritage preservation while contributing to the social and economic regeneration of the city centre. The project seeks to bolster Armagh's status as a cultural destination, complementing its famous cathedrals and historic architecture.
The site has been vacant since 1986. While the council acquired the building in 1997, previous regeneration attempts stalled. However, a fresh opportunity has now emerged through the Mid South West Growth Deal. This funding is intended to support a viable mixed-use proposal to ensure the building's future. As the project moves into its next phase, the Council is calling on residents, community groups, and businesses to participate in a series of engagement sessions. An open day for the public will be held on Saturday 14 March from 10am to 3pm. Due to the nature of the event, booking is essential and can be managed via the council's website at www.armaghbanbridgecraigavon.gov.uk/armaghgaol.
The engagement programme will focus on exploring potential uses for the site that promote economic and environmental sustainability. The feedback gathered will be instrumental in forming the business case currently being developed for the project.
Carlin Planning is facilitating the stakeholder sessions on behalf of the Council. Parties interested in sharing their views can also do so by emailing info@carlinplanning.com.
The Mid South West Growth Deal, which identifies Armagh Gaol as a priority, is a long-term investment programme involving councils and government partners. It aims to drive regional economic growth, with the Gaol project expected to act as a catalyst for wider city regeneration.
