Safety Concerns Raised as Major L'Derry Water Project Progresses
Work is continuing on a significant £2.5 million initiative by NI Water designed to secure the water supply for Derry City for the next quarter-century.
While the upgrades at Craigavon Bridge are moving forward, the project team has highlighted a concerning rise in anti-social activity at the construction site, prompting a direct plea for public cooperation.
The extensive investment is intended to bolster the resilience of the local water network, ensuring a more secure supply for both residential and commercial properties in the area. However, recent incidents have threatened to disrupt this essential infrastructure work. Anna Delargy, NI Water Project Manager, commented: "We are asking the public to help us keep the local community and our teams safe while working on the bridge. It has recently come to our attention that anti-social activity is taking place on the bridge, which could potentially damage our safety hoarding and barge while construction is underway. This may appear to some as harmless fun, but it is dangerous, puts our teams at risk, and slows progress on this essential water infrastructure improvement scheme.
"The safety of the public and our workers is our top priority and we hope that we can work together with the local community to stop any incidents at the bridge, allowing us to progress the scheme efficiently and safely."
NI Water is now calling upon local leaders and community representatives to assist in discouraging such actions. Members of the public who observe any suspicious or anti-social behaviour at the site are encouraged to contact the PSNI on 101, reach out to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111, or notify Waterline on 03457 440088.
