St Patrick's Day Parking Charges Abolished in Key Cities
Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has announced that St Patrick's Day will henceforth be classified as a non-charge day for Controlled Parking Zones (CPZs).
The decision follows a successful amendment to existing legislation, which ensures that St Patrick's Day is now treated with the same parking exemptions as other major holiday periods. The new rules apply specifically to on-street parking within the CPZs of Belfast, Lisburn, and Newry.
Minister Kimmins stated: "There has previously been a difference between St Patrick's Day and other holiday periods when it comes to parking charges. My Department has been working to amend the legislation and I am pleased to confirm that from 2026 St Patrick's Day will be a non-charge day for on-street parking in Controlled Parking Zone areas in Belfast, Lisburn and Newry." The Minister highlighted that the change is intended to assist those participating in holiday events, as well as shoppers and visitors. She added: "This will provide greater flexibility for those wanting to either enjoy the festivities or simply to visit one of the cities to socialise or shop on their day off."
Despite the relaxation of fees, the Minister issued a reminder regarding road safety and accessibility for the upcoming holiday week. "I would also remind anyone visiting any of our towns and cities next week to continue to park legally and responsibly, and to think about the potential negative impact that inconsiderate parking can have on other people. If we all park responsibly we can ensure we have safer streets, better access for disabled people, support for local businesses and keep our transport system running smoothly," she continued.
It is important to note that this legislative change applies only to on-street parking within designated CPZs. Motorists are advised that the majority of off-street car parks are managed by local councils, and their specific charging structures may still apply.
