Belfast Celebrates 30 Years Of Cruise Tourism As 2026 Season Approaches
Belfast is set to mark a major milestone in its tourism history on 1 April as it officially launches the 2026 summer cruise season. This year marks 30 years since the first cruise vessel arrived at Belfast Harbour in 1996, a period during which the city has evolved into the busiest cruise port on the island of Ireland and the second busiest in the UK.
The upcoming season will begin with the arrival of Fred Olsen Cruise Line's 'Bolette'. Throughout the year, the city is scheduled to host 141 cruise calls, including 10 ships making their first-ever visit to Belfast. A significant trend for 2026 is the expansion of the "turnaround" market, with 13 such cruises expected—nearly double the seven recorded in 2025. These calls, where passengers both start and end their journeys in the city, are key drivers for overnight stays and local spending.
The industry currently contributes approximately £26 million to the Northern Ireland economy annually. To sustain this growth, work is continuing on a new £90m deepwater cruise quay. Located at the mouth of the port and expected to open in 2028, this infrastructure will allow Belfast to accommodate the world's largest cruise ships. Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins MLA praised the sector's development: "The cruise industry is a crucial driver of our regional infrastructure and economic prosperity. Seeing Belfast Harbour's growth into the busiest cruise ship port on the island is a fantastic achievement. This 30-year milestone reflects the hard work of everyone involved in making the region a welcoming and accessible destination for international tourism."
Dr Theresa Donaldson, Chair of Belfast Harbour Commissioners, added: "What began as two ship visits in 1996 has evolved into a thriving industry that supports thousands of jobs and brings global vibrancy to our waterfront. Our ongoing investment in the port including new deepwater quay facilities underscores our commitment to ensuring Belfast remains a top-tier destination for cruise tourism for the next 25 years and beyond."
Gerry Lennon, CEO of Visit Belfast, highlighted the partnership's success: "The 30th anniversary marks the positive impact cruise tourism has brought to our city. By welcoming visitors from all corners of the globe, we proudly showcase the very best of what Belfast City & Region has to offer. Our strategic partnership with Belfast Harbour has never been stronger."
